There are unquestionably games out there that are more involving and complex than Rich Treats. Nevertheless, this game is one that has an interesting special feature and enough about it to mean that it’s worth giving our in-depth review a look over to see what you make of it.
There’s only really one special feature that comes into play when you’re in the world of Rich Treats, so we’ll talk you through it now:
Exploding Reels Feature
There are loads of slots out there that have some sort of variation on the Exploding Reels feature, all with different names. Regardless of the label the feature has been given, it works in pretty much the same way in every game it appears in. The idea is that you play the slot as normal, but if a line ends up being a winner then the winning symbols will ‘explode’ and disappear.
They don’t remain blank, however, with the symbols above them falling to take up their space. Obviously, that will then leave more blank spaces, so new symbols will drop in from above to fill up the reels. If the new combination of reels results in more winning lines then they too will explode after you’ve been given the winnings from them, with new lines forming. This continues on and on until you can no longer form any winning lines, at which point the normal game resumes.
Gameplay & RTP
If you spend some time playing all of the various games that are powered by Virtue Fusion then you’ll realise there’s a whole gamut of options available to you. Some are remarkably involving games, with countless special features and a huge amount of time spent making them as playable as possible. Some are based around popular TV shows and feature clips from them or characters that you’d recognise. Others have huge jackpots that give you a chance to win a large amount of money if you get lucky. Yet one of the most consistent types of games is what we like to call the ‘brief distractions’. These aren’t designed to capture you attention for very long, instead aimed at users that are perhaps waiting for a bingo room to open, or who want a break after a run of bad fortune. Rich Treats very much fits into that final category, with everything about the game seeming to suggest that it’s just there to amuse you for a short amount of time before you get back to what you were doing. Perhaps that’s fitting, considering the subject matter of this particular slot. After all, what is a cake or sweet treat if not something to briefly savour, even if it doesn’t fill you up? With a Return To Player average of 94.65%, Rich Treats is a bit more interesting than the majority of games that offer 0.65% less, but not as good as those that stretch up to 98%.
Whilst it’s not meant to be anything more than a brief distraction and the RTP average isn’t high enough to bring in those that only really care about the money that they’re likely to get back from a game, there’s something about Rich Treats that makes it one of the best games of its type in the Virtue Fusion canon. Let’s start by looking at the theme, which is consistent in the extreme from the moment that you load it up. You’re essentially meant to be looking into the shop window of a bakery or similar, with the outside of the window decorated with a colourful awning and curtains of orange and pink. There’s a sign at the top of the window that declares the shop to be ‘Rich Treats’, with the ‘Spin’ button made up of a rolling pin. The rest of the bottom line of the game is made up of signs like those you’d expect to find in a cake shop, whilst the line numbers are made out of stars. The colour scheme, away from the awning, is browns and cremes that will have your stomach rumbling in no time. Yet it’s in the symbols that the game truly makes its mark, thanks to Cakes Donuts and Fondant Fancies that look as though you could eat them off the screen. Even the J, Q, K and A symbols are made to look like cakes, ensuring that the entire game stays very much on topic, down to the silhouette of the baker you can see behind the window.
Theming isn’t everything, of course, but for those of you that care about such things you definitely won’t be disappointed. You’re unlikely to be all that disappointed in the gameplay either, just as long as you realise that it’s never going to have the bells and whistles of some of the more high-profile games on the market. Rich Treats is one of the more modern slots that you’ll find, so the reels spin about as smoothly as you’re likely to see. There’s a slightly artificial blurring appearance to the spinning of the reels, but that means that it doesn’t give you a headache in the same way that some of the older games that can’t cope with the graphics do. They land without issue when the reels stop spinning and the Exploding Reels will never stop being a fun feature. You’re already delighted from having hit a winning line, only for the winning symbols to disappear and be replaced by others, possibly creating new winning lines. What’s not to love? It’s a shame that there isn’t another mini-game or two on offer with Rich Treats, but then if there were then it would no longer come under the category of being mildly distracting and would start to be a far more in-depth slot. Whether you enjoy Rich Treats as much as we did will depend entirely on what you’re hoping to get out of a game, but if you’ve just got a couple of minutes to waste then this is a good place to start.
